About Wai-chung

Op. 1 Childhood...

Native of Hong Kong, Wai-chung began piano lessons with her Mom when she was five years old. At the age of fourteen, she was awarded the “Hong Kong Arts Festival Prize for the Most Outstanding Performer of Western Instruments”, which led her to London, England, for a cultural and musical exchange tour. Wai-chung made her concerto debut the following year with rave reviews. The Trinity College of Music in London, England awarded her with the Licentiate of Trinity College of Music Diploma in Performance (L.T.C.L.) when she was sixteen.


Op. 2 Education...

Wai-chung received training in singing along with her studies in piano. At the tender age of ten, she won first prize at the Hong Kong Children’s Singing Competition.

She furthered her education at the Royal Northern College of Music, England from 1985-89. In a short period of four years, she obtained both the honours degree of G.Mus.(Hons.)RNCM and the Professional Performer’s Diploma (P.P.R.N.C.M), the highest honour awarded in practical disciplines by the College. While in England, she won many piano awards and scholarships. Among them was the coveted Countess of Munster Award. In singing, she had the privilege to be the soprano soloist in February, 1987 at the premiere of a work written for soprano and orchestra to be broadcasted around the world by the British Broadcasting Corporation.


Op. 3 Career...

Wai-chung has performed regularly as concert pianist, soprano, and chamber musician in North America, Southeast Asia, and England. The British Broadcasting Corporation, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and Radio-Television Hong Kong have recorded both her solo playing and singing.

She is known for her versatility as a performer. She was a double awards winner (Best Duo Artists, and Best Instrumentalist) with her husband Hok Kwan at the 2005 New Brunswick Gospel Music Hall of Fame. She made a solo appearance in the 2007 Willow Creek Worship Arts Conference held in Quispamsis, New Brunswick.

Wai-chung is known for her versatility as a performing artist. She was a double awards winner (Best Duo Artists, and Best Instrumentalist)
with her husband Hok Kwan at the 2005 New Brunswick Gospel Music Hall
of Fame. She made a solo appearance in the 2007 Willow Creek Worship
Arts Conference held in Quispamsis, New Brunswick. In 2008, she pioneered her community concert project known as L.I.F.E. MUSIC which brings “Lively, Innovative, Fulfilling, Engaging” concerts to Greater Saint John through her “inspired improvisation and fresh takes on famous songs”.  This project has developed into another monthly concert series in 2009, “LOVE TO SHARE”,  presented by the Saint John Arts Centre. Engagements in recent years include 1st soprano soloist in complete works with orchestra in Vivaldi’s “Gloria”, Bach’s “Magnificat”, and solo soprano in Mozart’s “Exsultate Jubilate”; guest soprano soloist with Early Music Studio in an all-Handel program, also solo and chamber concerts in New Brunswick and Ontario. In April 2010, she co-founded the Alto Mare Chorus and has been their chorus master ever since.

In addition, Wai-chung is a respected piano and voice teacher. She has taught at Hong Kong School of Sacred Music, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Bethany Bible College in Sussex, New Brunswick. She currently operates her private music studio. Many of her private students have been prizewinners at the New Brunswick Music Festivals as well as international competitions.


Op. 4 Community involvement...

Wai-chung is also actively involved in the community. She co-founded and led the Saint John Chinese Christian Ministries with her husband from 2003-2008. Since 2003, Wai-chung has been a member and a past president of University of New Brunswick, Saint John Campus Ministry.


Op. 5 Family...

Since 1992, Wai-chung has been living in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada where the world-famous Reversing Falls and the highest tides in the world can be found and experienced. She and her husband, Hok Kwan (a concert violinist and conductor) home-school their 3 children: Eunice (17), Matthew (12), and Ethan (11).
